Dustin Byrd
Auburn University Football Lettermen's Club

Dustin Byrd spoke to the club about his experiences as a walk-on Auburn University football player during the mid 1990s. The Enterprise native now working with Alabama Power Company in Montgomery related what a wonderful, albeit strenuous, experience it was and how it helped develop him both as an athlete and person. The AU Football Lettermen's Club will be hosting a golf tournament to raise funds for the Billy Hitchcock Miracle Field baseball facility for physically challenged individuals.

Byrd attained a baseball scholarship to a junior college and played one year before transferring to Auburn University to “walk on” as a football scout team player. His story was very interesting as he described his ordeal as a walk—one who persevered the physical challenges too earn a football scholarship. The discipline he learned as a football player has helped him to become a successful executive in the business world (he is attending law school and must apply discipline to manage his time effectively). Also, the spiritual aspect of the AU team has made him feel more complete and is helping him in his family and business life.

Byrd stated that it is an honor for him to be a football letterman. Attaining membership is by lettering on the team; associate members played on the team but did not letter and by being an honorary member (i.e., coaching). The Letterman’s Club is like a family and sponsors great causes like scholarships and Miracle Field.
