Farmers Market at Ag Heritage Park |
Dani Carroll, manager of the Farmers Market at Ag Heritage Park, presented information abou the market located on the Auburn University campus on Samford Avenue near the intersection of Samford and North Donahue Drive. It is open on every Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. from June 1 to September 28. It is a partnership with the Lee County Extension System, Alabama State Farmer’s Market Authority, Auburn Chamber of Commerce and the Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau in order to offer Alabama-grown products. If you don’t grow it, process it, can it, or make it yourself, you can’t sell it at the Farmers Market. Buying from the local farmer helps to benefit not only the farmer, but also the consumer. Buying from the farmer helps him to profit, which in turn helps him not to have to sell his farm. Buying from the farmer ensures healthier and better tasting food. Buying from the farmer helps to protect generic diversity. There are 25 or more vendors with a variety of produce, such as fresh-cut flowers, produce, goat cheese, goat milk soap, honey and more. The vendors pay a weekly or seasonal fee and the market is open to non-profit organizations as well. The market is open to all of Alabama and a vendor from as far away as Dothan attends weekly. |
