Kelvin Rudd
Associate Director
Center for Servant Leadership

Kelvin Rudd is the associate director of the Center for Servant Leadership at the Pastoral Institute in Columbus, Ga. Rudd opened the program with some interesting statistics:

  • only one in four people trust our government
  • 80 percent of working people dislike their job
  • we work, on average, 46 hours per week
  • 66 percent of those leaving a job leave due to incompetent management.

Rudd defined "servant leadership" as a style of leadership where the leader seeks to serve first and then aspires to lead. Servant leaders lead from the heart and believe deeply that part of their job is to empower others to grow as persons. Traditional leadership, such as the military, schools and some corporations, is management from the top down. Servant leadership is management from the bottom up. With this style, the boss should ask “can I help you?” These managers choose to serve first, often have no formal position, meet the legitimate needs of others and lead with authority not intimidation.
