History: a study of the club archives

“‘Gus,’ Our 1960-61 Rotary Fellow from Brazil ”

In the fall of 1960, Rotary International sent a handsome young veterinary student to Auburn as a Rotary fellow. His full name was Augustus Cesar Montiero de Castro, but he preferred to be called “Gus.”

Gus already had his undergraduate degree in veterinary science, but was pursuing additional work in Auburn University's outstanding veterinary school. He spoke to the Auburn Rotary Club and, as recalled, also attended and took part in the District Conference.

When Gus returned home, he urged our district to selected a college student to send to Brazil for the summer. If we would pay the transportation, Gus and local Rotary Clubs would arrange for his housing, food and travel while in Brazil. The district agreed and raised the money, with Auburn Rotary taking the lead. A local committee selected Charles Roberts Jr. of Auburn to go. Charles had studied Portuguese and was an excellent representative. He went and had a great time.
