History: a study of the club archives

“A Voice from the Past”

For the old time members of our club, Jim Foy’s burst of song before he led the “War Eagle” cry at the end of the Jan. 6 meeting was a voice from the past!

According to our archives, our May 29, 1952, meeting featured five of our charter members whose names still echo in Auburn: legendary Track Coach Wilbur Hutsell;, former dean of vet medicine, Ike McAdory; former dean of the Auburn Graduate School, Fred Allison; lumberman W.L. Long; and Shell Toomer of Toomer’s Corner fame.

After the old timers were presented, a barber shop quartet entertained the members, then meeting at the Old Pitts Hotel.

In the quartet were Jim Foy, V.C. Helms, Harold Klontz and an unrecorded member. We all remember that Jim lost Emmalu this last year. V.C. Helms’ wife, Georgette, is still living and resides at Oak Park here in Auburn. Harold Klontz’ wife, Mary Ross, is living in the Gardens at Calvary just north of Columbus. Both of them welcome visitors.
